What happens?
- Plaque made of cholesterol, fat and other substances builds up inside the coronary arteries.
- Over time, this narrows the arteries and restricts blood flow.
- If plaque ruptures, it can form a clot and completely block the artery.
Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) occurs when the arteries that supply blood to your heart muscle become narrowed or blocked due to plaque build-up. This reduces blood flow to the heart and can cause chest pain, shortness of breath or even a heart attack.
